6 NATIVE FLOWERS PERFECT FOR YOUR L.A. WEDDING

Contributed by Olive Dawson

Whether you’re using a florist for your upcoming nuptials, or plan to grow your own bouquet, there are plenty of gorgeous native flowers to choose. Southern California is home to some of the most vibrant and unique styles of flowers not available to other brides across the country. Using native flowers, or those that already grow naturally in the L.A. area is the best option for your budget as well. Check out these six native flowers perfect for your L.A. wedding:

1. Monkey Flower

This bloom is a native staple in Southern California. There are plenty of varieties to choose from, ranging in colors from red and orange to yellow, and white. The flower has a long season from winter through summer, making it a natural choice for any L.A. wedding. Monkey flower would look stunning as an accent in a bridal bouquet as well as in centerpieces. It's easy to grow your own in the backyard. For best results, plant monkey flower in any type of well-drained soil in a partly shaded spot of the garden.

2. California Aster

This perennial herb is part of the sunflower family, making it a bright and cheery addition to your big day. The California aster is a small bloom that features a beautiful yellow center and slender white petals. It flowers in the summer and goes great in bouquets and in hairpieces. They grow fast, so plant them in the spring in a partly shaded area, and they'll be ready for your summer wedding.

3. Buckwheat

Who needs baby's breath or other fillers when California gardens are full ow buckwheat? There are so many varieties in the area, making it a great choice for any L.A. wedding. This delicate flower grows on a larger shrub that blooms from spring through fall. The flowers grow as a cluster and can come in a variety of colors from white, cream, pink, and yellow. Use any type of buckwheat as a delicate hair piece or in a flower girl bouquet. The intricate flowers can also fill in spots of your bridal bouquet. Make sure you give the flower plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil when planting your own buckwheat.

 4. Bush Poppy

This is the perfect California native for winter and early spring weddings. This delicate flower grows in a solitary bloom on a larger bush and features yellow teacup-sized flowers. Bush poppy may get folded or damaged in a bouquet, so it's best to use it in a large centerpiece or tablescape. It's a little tougher to grow at home and does best on rocky clay soils with excellent drainage.

5. Showy Penstemon

You'll find this native flower growing wild in woodland areas throughout Southern California. This gorgeous flower features elongated pinkish-lavender petals with erect stems. Showy penstemon is an excellent choice when cut long to make a rustic bouquet as well as cut short to fit into larger centerpieces. The flower packs a punch when in bloom because of all the flowers that line the stems. It prefers dry and arid conditions, but you can grow it in your L.A. garden as long as the soil is dry and fast draining.

6. Golden Yarrow

This native beauty features small bright yellow flowers for a stunning but simple bouquet. Golden Yarrow comes from the daisy family and can be either an annual or perennial plant. This gorgeous flower can make a statement in a centerpiece given the many blooms that cluster together at the end of the stems. Use it as a filler for a bridal bouquet or arrange a few stems together to add both height and drama to a reception centerpiece. Golden yarrow blooms in the winter through summer.

Choosing the right flowers for your wedding can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be with these native options. From simple to dramatic, you'll find plenty of blooms to add to your big day.

ERIN + LUCAS

We’ve been anxiously waiting to share these pictures of our stunning bride Erin with you, and now we finally can! We always love designing custom dresses with our brides, but this process was especially wonderful, seeing as the fabric we used for Erin’s dress has been passed down for three generations of brides in her family. Erin and her event coordinators at All Occasions Event Planning, put together a gorgeous ranch wedding teeming with flowers, and rustic vibes. Congratulations Erin and Lucas!

LAURIE + MIKE

Our beautiful, body positive blogger L’ezu bride babe (enough alliteration for you?) Laurie Brucker, just sent us her wedding photos and of course we’re head over heels for them. We loved designing this form flattering layered lace gown for Laurie. We wanted to make sure to incorporate the shorter length in the front and longer train in the back in order to showcase those killer Valentino shoes! Laurie couldn’t have been more wonderful to work with and she’s emanating absolute joy and beauty in these gorgeous pictures by Nicole Leever Photography. Congratulations Laurie and Mike on your beautiful day!

NEKOLLE + JARELL

We cannot describe how thrilled we are to finally share one of the most beautiful weddings we’ve ever been a part of. Nekolle was an absolute dream to work with, describing to us the dress she imagined for herself, and helping us make it a reality. We ended up creating a silk slip dress that absolutely fit her like a glove, with a lace overlay to create a sense of layering and texture but maintain elegance and simplicity. The proof is in these gorgeous pictures by Milanes Photography. Also did we mention the dope pink suits the bridal party wore?! Could this wedding be any more fun?

Congratulations Nekolle and Jarell!

JESSIE + DAVAN

One of our most spectacular brides had her French Disco themed wedding chosen to be featured on brides.com and we just couldn't wait to share it with you! You can read more about the details on the post but let's just say it's an absolute stunner down to the last detail. We were delighted to work with Jessie on her customs made, off-the-shoulder dress. We drew inspiration from old-era France, using white silk charmeuse and hand stitched french embroidery. We're also in love with the the touch of neon at the reception and the disco theme! Congratulations Jessie and Davan!

LINDSAY + PETER

We've decided the perfect way to close out 2017 is celebrating one of our loveliest brides yet. Lindsay and Peter were married in Arroyo Grande on a beautiful typical California day. Our favorite part of creating her wedding gown was adding a dramatic ruffle down the back paired with a plunging lower back V cut. We hope all of our L'ezu brides and followers have a beautiful and happy New Year and enjoy these beautiful shots of Lindsay and Peter!

JACLYN + SAM

One of our sweetest L'ezu brides, Jaclyn, has shared her gorgeous wedding photos with us and we simply couldn't help but share them right away! This California wedding managed to look extremely professional and well put together, while maintaining an element of DIY and a personal touch we could only dream of replicating. Just ask Jaclyn about her baked goods: every member in her close family contributed by making their favorite cookie recipes! We wanted to capture Jaclyn's free spiritedness and effervescence in her wedding gown by giving her a flowing skirt line, subtle beading, and a plunging detailed neck line. Congratulations Jaclyn and Sam!

Keltie knew she wanted to incorporate a vibrant blue into her wedding, and we were more than happy to take the risk and make it a gorgeous part of her gown. Add the magnificent backdrop of the historic post office in Washington D.C. and you've got the perfect blend of modern and classic. Congratulations Keltie and Ryan!

GILLIAN + ROBIN

After a long rainy week, this golden ranch wedding was exactly what we needed! Located on her new husband's cattle ranch in Tehachapi, CA, Gillian's wedding was light, big, and full of joy. We at L'ezu loved working with Gillian to create a deep plunging neckline gown and we're thrilled with the final result. Congratulations Gillian and Robin!

CARLY + ALEX

Our lovely bride Carly had one of our favorite weddings of all time. An artist and designer herself, she worked with us at L'ezu to create her unique, stunning gown. She also handpicked the florals at the flower district and her vision created this magical wedding that has left us awestruck. We can't help but brag and show you these gorgeous pictures!

KANDICE + TK WEDDING

We just received these gorgeous pictures from our perfect L'ezu bride Kandice! She had a stunning Santa Barbara ceremony overlooking the ocean culminating with a delicious reception at the delicious Latin restaurant BESO. We loved creating this draped chiffon and silk gown for her, and the low back brought the simple but sexy look together. We wish all of the happiness to our beautiful L'ezu bride and her groom!

DANIELLE + LOGAN

Our L'ezu bride Danielle married her wonderful man Logan in this awesomely eclectic ranch wedding featured on the popular wedding blog Green Wedding Shoes! We loved working with the artistically inclined Danielle on her stunning gown with lace bell sleeves. The dramatic red lip perfectly complemented the cranberry red infused florals and completed her wedding look making this one of our favorites! A quote from the bride herself:

"We are all over the place so we decided it’s ok to go against what everything says about what you should or shouldn’t do. We knew we wanted a long farm style dinner. so we had one long table with 100 guests with really really good food. We love games so we had bocce ball and badmitton and a giant Jenga set was our “guest book” that they signed the blocks instead of some book we would never look at again. We love taxidermy so we incorporated that as well."

Congratulations Danielle and Logan!
